Cormac Thompson is a young choir singer from Lancashire, UK. He started singing when he was just 8 years old. In 2020, he created a YouTube channel and began posting videos of himself singing. Soon, something amazing happened—Decca Records, a big music company, discovered him and wanted to work with him to make an album!
One of his most famous performances is his treble version of the song “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from the musical Les Misérables. He recorded it at Masterchord Studio in London. This song was released as a charity single to help “Acting For Others,” a charity that gives money and support to people who work in theatres. This help was especially needed in 2020 when many theatres were closed.
In the video above, Cormac is 13 years old, and you can already see how amazing his voice is. Back in 2020, he couldn’t visit his nannie because of the lockdown rules. His nannie loves hearing him sing, so his mom started recording videos and uploading them to YouTube for her to watch. Cormac later said, “It wasn’t until I uploaded videos to YouTube singing songs for my Nannie in Northern Ireland that I realised just how much really I love it.”
From then on, Cormac never stopped singing. He practices every day and dreams of having a big career in music. In 2021, he got a message from Dominic Ferris, a famous pianist who wanted to record some songs with him. Dominic has worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and has sold over 3 million albums worldwide!
He has also been on six albums that made it into the top 10 charts. He even worked with the famous singer Michael Ball on the album Coming Home To You, which was number one in the UK! Dominic, along with Cormac’s parents, can see how talented and passionate he is. So far, they have recorded 8 songs together.
Cormac’s voice is so special that you might have heard him on TV in the UK. In 2021, he took part in the “BBC Young Chorister of the Year” competition and made it all the way to the finals! The final event took place in the beautiful Salisbury Cathedral. You can watch clips from this on his YouTube channel.
When asked about his favorite music, Cormac said, “I like to listen to all kinds of music. I love Ed Sheeran, and I’m learning to play one of his songs on the piano so I can sing along too. I really enjoy singing songs with beautiful melodies that show off my voice at its best.
I want to sing these songs before my voice changes and I get an adult voice, which is happening every day. I will be sad when I lose my treble voice, but I know it was a special gift that I could only have for a short time. I hope I won’t sound too awful when my adult voice comes in!”
