Annie Lennox needs no introduction. She’s a music icon, praised by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest singers of all time and called by VH1 “the greatest white soul singer alive.” Her daughter, Lola Lennox, is following in her footsteps. Using the professional name Lola Lennox, she’s carving out her own path in the music world. Lola, now 32, studied singing at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London before diving into her music career. In February 2020, she released her debut single, In the Wild. Just two months later, she got the chance to perform alongside her legendary mom.
On April 18, 2020, Annie and Lola joined forces for the One World: Together At Home concert, organized by Global Citizen to support Covid-19 relief efforts. The mother-daughter duo chose to sing the Eurythmics’ classic hit, There Must Be An Angel. Their performance was unforgettable. Fast forward to December 1, 2021, and they teamed up again, performing the same song for a special cause: the Mothers2Mothers (M2M) HIV-support charity’s 20th-anniversary gala in London. Annie is the patron of M2M, making the event even more meaningful.
Fans rave about Annie’s talent, and it’s clear why. Her voice still has the power to captivate. As Renee M said, “Annie still has the pipes!” Watching her perform, you can’t help but admire her skill. And as for Lola? Her voice is strong and beautiful, though she’s still finding her unique sound. What stands out most is the joy and pride Annie shows when her daughter sings.
One of the highlights of their performances together is seeing Annie play the piano. She doesn’t just play; she grooves, bringing energy and fun to the music. And when she and Lola harmonize at the end of their songs, it’s pure magic. Their chemistry is undeniable. As Charles Grey commented after watching their duet of Lola’s 2021 single Wherever You Go with the BBC Concert Orchestra, “WOW!!! The chemistry of the two voices is amazing… burst into tears, could not help myself.”
Annie’s move to Los Angeles in early 2020 with her husband, Mitch Besser, turned out to be perfect timing. Lola and her sister, model Tali Lennox, also live in LA, so the family could stay close during the pandemic. This closeness allowed Annie and Lola to perform together for the One World: Together At Home concert and gave Annie the chance to executive-produce Lola’s music.
Lola works on her songs in a studio on her mother’s property, where her boyfriend, producer Braeden Wright, helps her bring her ideas to life. Annie occasionally pops in to share her insights. “We all get on really well,” Lola said. “We each have a role to play that balances out the team really nicely. I’ve learned a lot from seeing my mum, how she sees music and how musical ideas come to her.” Lola joked that her mom has ideas “coming out of her ears” and shared that Annie’s input has been invaluable in transforming her music from raw demos into fully polished songs.
When it comes to musical inspiration, Lola looks up to legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Dusty Springfield. Of course, she also draws plenty of inspiration from her talented mother.
