Amidst the heartbreaking stories from the war in Ukraine, there’s a beautiful reminder of hope, talent, and joy: the COLOR MUSIC children’s choir from Dnipro. This extraordinary group of young singers has captured hearts worldwide with their stunning rendition of the Chainsmokers and Coldplay hit “Something Just Like This.” Their performance has gone viral, amassing millions of views on YouTube.
The Heart Behind the Choir
The COLOR MUSIC choir was founded by Olena and Oleksandr Petrykov, who have dedicated themselves to nurturing young talent. Through their program, children are taught not only how to sing but also essential musical skills like reading sheet music, mastering breath control, and even recording songs in a studio.
The choir’s website says it best: “We believe every child has talent.” For years, Olena and Oleksandr have worked tirelessly to uncover that talent, sparking a love for music in children and guiding them into a world of creativity and inspiration.
A YouTube Sensation
Their hard work has paid off in the form of a hugely popular YouTube channel with over 1.16 million subscribers. Over the past seven years, the channel has showcased countless young stars, blending Ukrainian songs with covers of international hits. From soulful ballads to lively pop songs, the kids have done it all.
One standout member is a young boy named Ilya, a budding star whose charm and voice have drawn comparisons to Elton John!
The choir’s performance of “Something Just Like This” is their biggest hit yet, with over 82 million views since it was uploaded on Christmas Day in 2018. As their popularity has grown, so has the choir itself. The directors have had to expand it four times to make room for all the talented kids eager to join.
A Joyful Performance
The “Something Just Like This” video is pure magic. The choir members are dressed to impress: boys in sharp black shirts and trousers with gold ties, and girls in elegant black dresses with gold belts. With their neat hair buns and polished outfits, the girls look incredibly sophisticated for their age—most of them are under 10 years old!
But it’s not just their singing or their outfits that make the performance special. It’s the sheer joy and energy radiating from every child.
The kids pour their hearts into the song, their enthusiasm shining through as some of the girls can’t resist moving to the music, waving their hands and even tossing in an adorable shimmy. It’s spontaneous, fun, and absolutely heartwarming.
When the song ends, the audience erupts in cheers, applause, and even some stamping feet. Though the camera doesn’t show the crowd, their excitement is unmistakable.
Singing for a Cause
Sadly, the joy and talent of the COLOR MUSIC choir are now under threat because of the war in Ukraine. But instead of stopping, the choir has taken on an even greater mission. Their performances have become a way to raise funds and awareness for aid efforts in Ukraine.
One of their most moving recent performances took place at a concert in Berlin. While the occasion was solemn, the choir experienced a moment of pure joy when Coldplay’s Chris Martin invited them to join him on stage to sing “Something Just Like This.”
A Moment to Remember
For the children, singing with one of the world’s biggest stars was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Yet, they handled it like true professionals, blending their voices beautifully with Chris Martin’s.
“They were so excited,” one organizer said. “You could see the joy in their faces—they loved every second of it.”
Watching the video is sure to bring a smile to your face. It’s a reminder of the power of music to bring people together, even in difficult times.
