Kid skipped school and made national headlines when Bruce Springsteen invited him on stage

Bruce Springsteen is famous for bringing kids up on stage during his concerts, often to sing “Waiting On A Sunny Day” with him. That’s exactly what happened to Australian teenager Nathan Testa in Brisbane in 2013.

Nathan’s dad had warned him to wear shorts because of the heat, but Nathan didn’t listen. “He wore his jeans, a white T-shirt, and a red cap. We pinned the cap to his belt,” his father recalled. But what happened next was pure luck. Before the concert, Nathan happened to meet Bruce outside the stadium. Later, during the show, Springsteen spotted him in the crowd and recognized him. Then, to everyone’s surprise, he invited Nathan up on stage!

Fans were thrilled. One, named TomHunterChicago, commented, “I can’t imagine anything more exciting. What an absolute thrill for that young man!” Another fan, Uliniebergall, was just as amazed: “If this really was totally unprepared and unrehearsed, it’s one of the most beautiful musical moments I’ve ever seen and heard in my life. And even if it was planned, I don’t care—it’s still magical.”

The excitement didn’t stop there. At Springsteen’s next Australian show, in Hunter Valley, something similar happened. This time, Bruce pulled another fan up on stage. The lucky guy’s name was Bill, and he had traveled all the way from New Jersey. Springsteen handed him a guitar, and Bill got to play “No Surrender” in front of thousands of people.

The next morning, Bill was spotted at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Hunter Valley—the same hotel where Springsteen and his crew were staying. This sparked some questions. Was Bill just another lucky fan, or had he been chosen beforehand?

Some people wondered if Springsteen’s team planned these moments in advance. Could they have called Bill up because he was already in Australia? Maybe he had met the band backstage? Or was it all just a coincidence? It’s possible there’s some kind of screening process, but bringing in fake “fans” from another country seems unlikely.

At the end of the day, big concerts involve some stage planning, but that doesn’t mean everything is scripted. The magic of these moments is real, whether they happen by chance or with a little backstage preparation.

One thing is for sure—Nathan Testa grabbed his opportunity, and he rocked the stage. Well done, Nathan!
