In a truly unforgettable moment on The Voice UK, Olly Murs had the chance to interview the legendary Sir Tom Jones about his iconic first hit, “It’s Not Unusual.” With his usual cheeky humor, Olly said, “I haven’t heard it in such a long time, that song.” The crowd chuckled, but what happened next was pure magic. Always the entertainer, Sir Tom decided to give the people exactly what they wanted—a live performance of his timeless classic. And wow, did he deliver!

At 79 years old, Sir Tom sang “It’s Not Unusual” with the same rich, velvety voice that made him a global star back in the 1960s. If you listen to his performance on The Voice and compare it to the original 1964 recording, you’d hardly notice a difference. His unmistakable Welsh baritone was in top form, and the audience couldn’t get enough of it. As Sir Tom worked his charm on stage, the energy in the room was electric. Meghan Trainor, one of the other judges, looked completely star-struck, smiling like a fan seeing her favorite artist live for the first time.

Of course, Sir Tom isn’t just about the voice—he’s a full package performer. Even after all these years, he knows how to bring the heat, turning up his charisma and owning the stage like only a true legend can. Watching him sing, you could see how much he loves performing, and his joy was absolutely contagious. As one fan said, “Some people are just born to entertain, and Sir Tom is definitely one of them.”

The segment also included a fascinating interview with Sir Tom, where he shared some surprising details about the song’s history. He told Olly, “I recorded ‘It’s Not Unusual’ when I was 24, and it went to number one.” Imagine that—a young, relatively unknown singer skyrocketing to fame with his debut single! Sir Tom explained that he recorded the song at the very end of 1964, and it was released in early 1965. But here’s the twist: it wasn’t even supposed to be his song.

“I did the demo for Sandie Shaw,” Sir Tom revealed. “It was meant for Sandie Shaw. And then they played it to Sandie Shaw and, God bless her, she said, ‘Whoever’s singing this, that’s his song.’” Sir Tom went on to re-record the track, knowing deep down that it was destined to be a hit. “I knew the song was a hit when I did the demo,” he said. And he was absolutely right—“It’s Not Unusual” became the smash hit that launched his incredible career.

This wasn’t the first time Sir Tom proved his star power. His 1968 live performance of “Delilah” on The Ed Sullivan Show cemented his status as a powerhouse entertainer, and his charm and talent have only grown stronger with time.
