Lukas Nelson, the son of country music legend Willie Nelson, found a way to bring people together during the difficult times of the COVID-19 lockdown. In 2020, he started a YouTube series called “Quarantunes,” where he played covers of classic songs by artists like Louis Armstrong, Neil Young, and Lady Gaga. But it was his third episode, in March 2020, that really made an impact. Lukas covered Paul Simon’s legendary song “Sound of Silence,” and the video went viral, gathering over 1.4 million views!
Before playing the song, Lukas spoke about its deep meaning and how it connected to what was happening in the world at the time. He introduced it as “a great American tune, written by a native New Yorker, Paul Simon.” He then addressed the growing crisis in New York, saying, “There’s a lot happening in New York right now, and if we all don’t encourage each other to bunker down, then it might happen all over this country. So, don’t be silent. Encourage your friends and loved ones to stay indoors.”
Even though his words carried a serious message, his performance was absolutely mesmerizing. Lukas, one of Willie Nelson’s eight children, has clearly inherited his father’s talent for raw, heartfelt music. His gentle guitar fingerpicking and emotional delivery made the song feel even more powerful.
At first glance, with his wild, lion-like hair, some people might expect Lukas to play heavy metal. But in reality, he has been rooted in the country rock scene for years. He officially stepped into the spotlight in 2008 when he formed the band ‘Promise of the Real’ with fellow musician Anthony LoGerfo. The two met at a Neil Young concert and instantly bonded over their love of music.
Neil Young and Lukas’ father, Willie Nelson, have a long history together. In 1985, they joined forces with John Mellencamp to start the annual Farm Aid festival, an event that helps struggling farmers. As Lukas and his band became a regular act at Farm Aid in the late 2000s, Neil Young took notice. He invited them to join him on tour, and their collaboration grew even bigger. Together, they released three albums: “Earth” (2016), “The Visitor” (2017), and “Noise & Flowers” (2022). Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real have also played with Neil Young at major concerts, including his unforgettable 2019 co-headline show with Bob Dylan in Hyde Park, London.
But the band’s success didn’t stop there. In a twist of fate, Hollywood superstar Bradley Cooper saw them perform during their Desert Trip gig with Neil Young. He later reached out to Lukas, asking for advice on how to act like a true musician for his upcoming movie, “A Star Is Born.” The two quickly hit it off, and Lukas ended up co-writing several of the movie’s songs alongside Bradley and Lady Gaga. He even appeared in the film as part of Bradley’s character’s band!
Through his soulful “Quarantunes” performances, Lukas Nelson has proven his ability to blend past and present, bringing timeless music to a new audience. His haunting version of “Sound of Silence” deeply connected with people during an uncertain time, showcasing his incredible talent.
